The modern Eriskay ponies are the last surviving original native ponies from the Western Isles of Scotland. There were only a handful left in the 1970s but the breed has been saved through the hard work of dedicated people and there are now over 400 pure bred ponies around the British Isles and the world though they are still classed as critical by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust
